Youth Services

RC Hout Bay has recently chartered a number of Rotary/Youth Service Clubs in Hout Bay Schools – endorsed by the principals and managed by the teachers:

The Early Act Club @ Sentinel Primary School

  • 26 children meet twice per week. Their first task: to learn all about animal behavior and feeding programs whilst helping the staff @DARG

Interact Club Silikamva High School

  • 21 young learners elected their own leadership committee to lead the club in service and community projects
  • They have already chosen a few in Imizamo Yethu and are actively working with elderly and the needy – holding a clean-up in their community on Freedom Day 2015

Interact Club Hout Bay High

  • The youth committee has already chosen their young leaders. The club with 26 learners will was chartered in September 2015.

RYLA camps (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)

Several Grade 10-12 students from Hout Bay high schools have been chosen to attend 4-day outdoor RYLA camps. They will test their skills and abilities through teambuilding exercises and individual self growth whilst experiencing fun and fellowship across cultures and languages.

Health and Welfare

  • Rotary is actively involved with the Main Road Clinic , having helped build the clinic over 10 years ago. This critical project in Hout Bay is also funded with the help of our partner Club Coolamon in Australia. Specifically, we ….
  • Help provide medical equipment, assisting the Hout Bay Health Forum with vaccination drives
  • Provide food as ‘Operation Medical Hope’ for HIV-patients and others – to the amount of R 50,000 per annum
  • Support a local community-run feeding scheme in Imizamo Yethu
  • For the third year running, as part of an African Rotary initiative, RC Hout Bay will be holding ‘Rotary Family Health Days’ in Imizamo Yethu. This is an opportunity for government health workers, as well as Hout Bay based organizations to provide a range of free health services to all members of the Hout Bay community – e.g. HIV/AIDS testing, drug-counseling, vaccinations, basic health check ups, eyesight tests referrals – only to mention a few

2015 Health Days

2015 Health Days were held on 7, 8 and 9 October in Hangberg with 6000 people attending and getting checked and treated.

  • Wheelchairs are provided for a number of needy patients in Hangberg or Imizamo Yethu
  • In cooperation with the Hout Bay Lions Club, Xmas parcels and food are distributed to families, seniors and children
  • Recently, we facilitated a donated ultra-sonic scanner (thanks to a Dutch sponsor) to be located in Victoria Hospital, replacing a 20-year old machine
  • With fellow Rotarians from Sweden, RC Hout Bay will be installing a new dental clinic in Hangberg, to operate from the Sentinel Primary School in 2016
  • In Khayalitsha, RC Hout Bay is heavily involved with the running of Nonceba, a centre for abused children

Adventures into Citizenship

Every year, RC Hout Bay sponsors a number of Grade 11-12 nominees to attend a week-long course. This course includes governance and democracy at a national and local level, visits to parliament & local municipalities, environmental awareness and more

Youth Exchange

Rotary International Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people the opportunity from other countries to immerse themselves in different communities, thus planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding

More than 1000 Dictionaries are provided to Hout Bay Schools by our Rotary Club

Ashley Award

in memory of Rotary Youth Exchange student Ashley Kaimowitz, who partnered with two nations and many other Rotary Clubs to establish Nonceba, a rape crisis centre in Khayelitsha, RC Hout Bay awards an ‘Ashley Award’ to outstanding young citizens who uphold the ‘Object’ and true values of Rotary

Bursary Fund

We assist youngsters in gaining access to tertiary education by means of bursaries and student loans. The total value of these bursaries surpasses R350,000 annually! Rotarians from Hout Bay and our UK-partner Clubs provide ongoing mentorship – remaining in touch with all these students constantly

Other Activities

Twice a year, RC Hout Bay is very visible on the streets of Hout Bay for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and Two Oceans ultra-marathon. Members of the club, along with community volunteers (we call them our Hout Bay Heroes) marshal along the route to keep the athletes and community safe
